Sitting services are an easy business to start. But one local pet-sitting service knew quickly that it was hard to stand out. As a personal favor, my older Sister (Sarah) hired me to design a logo that would make her growing business impossible to overlook.
The challenge I was faced with was making a unique logo that accurately represented the business. Additionally, the logo needed to be adapted to print as well as digital media.
Probing the client during our initial discussions helped me to construct a definitive criterion within a swift timeframe. The style guides and practical need for the logo mandated:
These requirements balanced a convenient blend of specifics and creative liberties. However, additional design files ranging from mood boards, drafts and colour pallets were also requested before supplying the final design.
To acquaint myself more with the intended style requested, I compiled a mood board that sourced illustrations heavily linked to the golden age of North American Animation. Drawing inspiration from older works like Looney Tunes and the Fleischer Cartoons as well as newer works like Cuphead and Hollow Knight.
From these influences, I was able to supply a style guide proposal of:
With some experimentation in Adobe Illustrator, I developed a logo adaptable to business cards, stickers, profile pictures and banners.
Completing and presenting the final logo design gave me the same profuse joy as my client. Expressing the effectiveness of the design came in 3 elements:
The final design was gravely approved by Sarah herself who took immediate action to establish her business with this logo as her brand identity. Seeing the work displayed through business cards, stickers, magnets and online advertisements gave a creative impact I was proud of.
"I found the logo to be exactly what I envisioned, Lindsey considered what the business represents and the creation process was fun and exciting."
-- SARAH VASSALLO (Owner of Sarah's Sitting Service)
Updates from Sarah informed me that a major increase in clients occurred since advertising with my design. Several clients had even mentioned that the business drew their attention due to the logo itself.
Having the chance to be hired for this commission was a privilege that expanded many of my skills. Such skill sets from style guides to advanced Illustrator features sharpened my approaches to creative design and how one engages with a client.
Nonetheless, the project also highlighted the need to be centralized with my workplace and presentation. By doing so, the requested content can be easier to access and stylistically consistent.
